The Alta system and its technology

Keurig launched the Alta System using plastic-free and aluminum-free AltaRounds pressed coffee. These rounds consist of roasted coffee beans that the manufacturer grinds and presses before wrapping them in a proprietary plant-based coating. This coating contains alginate, a material derived from seaweed, which withstands the pressure needed for authentic espresso. After brewing, the grounds and coating come out as a single piece that consumers can compost or dispose of like coffee grounds. The coating is BPI certified for home and commercial compostability, and the material is NSF-certified. Phil Drapeau, Senior Vice President, Future Coffee Systems for Keurig Dr Pepper, said that removing the plastic pod allows for exceptional coffee without compromise. Neha Mallik, Senior Director of Product Development at Keurig Dr Pepper, said that the plant-based coating makes this system possible. Because each AltaRounds pressed coffee includes a recipe code, the Keurig Alta brewer automatically adjusts the pressure, temperature, the water-to-coffee ratio, and other settings to brew every beverage exactly as the manufacturer intended. The system brings an expansive cafe-style menu home and allows for rich coffee or authentic espresso.

The system includes an integrated milk frother to make lattes, cappuccinos, cortados, or other drinks. The brewer delivers up to 10 bars of high-pressure extraction for espresso and uses optimized pressure for every other style of brew. Users can prepare these beverages both hot and iced.
