Dangerous glass breakage
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall today for approximately 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers sold in the United States during a 52-year span from 1974 through October 2026. This recall follows 70 reports of glass carafes breaking during use, encompassing 48 reports of burns to consumers. The CPSC warns that damaged or cracked glass carafes can break unexpectedly during use, which poses a risk of serious burn injuries to the user. Metal spoons or other metal utensils can damage the glass carafes when users stir coffee, potentially leading to breakage during subsequent use. The affected items include 8-cup and 12-cup models with replaceable glass carafes from eight specific Bodum models: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya. These products originated from manufacturing in Portugal and Thailand and were imported by New York-based Bodum USA. Consumers purchased these items at Target, Walmart, and various coffee and home goods stores nationwide, as well as through Amazon, Bodum’s website, and other online retailers for prices between $15 and $65.
Unacceptable remedy for burn risks
Bodum’s remedy is inadequate because the company provides no refunds or replacement coffee makers to consumers who own the faulty models. Instead, Bodum provides a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label to help mitigate the risk of breakage. Owners must stop using metal utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafes and avoid using carafes that are cracked or damaged. The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most affected models, and the company engraves the brand name on the glass carafes along with specific product warnings.
