A workaround for impossible tracking

Blueprint Coffee announced last week on its website that it will provide a 5% discount on all retail and wholesale coffee purchases to return the funds collected from the unconstitutional Liberation Day tariffs. Green coffee importers began returning money to roasters over the summer after the US government was ordered to repay over $100 billion. Because tracking every individual bag of coffee or espresso order to reach the final consumer is a near-impossible task, Blueprint Coffee will instead provide a 5% discount to customers using the code TARIFF-REFUND. This discount applies to any coffee order and remains active as long as the yellow banner about the refund stays on the website. The company decided to issue this relief because it felt the move was the right thing to do, even though it could have used the money for inventory, building maintenance, special projects, or to pad its bank accounts with operating capital. The company stated: "Could we hold on to the money? Yes. Could we reinvest it into inventory, building maintenance, special projects, or pad our bank accounts with operating capital? Yes. But could we – in good conscience – move forward and operate business as usual? Is that the right thing for us to do? The only answer for us is, no."

Terms for the refund

The decision to bypass the logistical difficulty of tracking every single transaction is the right way to handle the sudden surplus of tariff funds resulting from the court order. While the company could have padded its bank accounts with operating capital, it chose to pass the savings to consumers instead.

The 5% discount applies to both retail and wholesale coffee purchases. Customers can enter the TARIFF-REFUND code at checkout. This offer stays active as long as the yellow banner about the refund remains on the website. To prevent the funds from running out too quickly, the company limited the discount to 10 uses per customer. Blueprint Coffee will move toward permanent price reductions across its entire range during its semi-annual pricing review in December to remove the need for a coupon code.
