Takoma and Shaw favorites

I recommend the Takoma area if you want to visit Lost Sock Coffee Roasters. Their Takoma cafe opened in 2021, and a second NoMa location opened in June 2026. They roast in Brightwood Park using a 6kg Mill City Roaster. Their light roast style results in fruity and bright coffees. They provide wholesale coffee to various other cafes across the city. I recommend their London Eye, though you should expect a line because the Takoma cafe has limited seating and no wifi. Takoma Bev Co sits just across the Maryland border from Lost Sock. They serve a custom Lost Sock espresso blend with notes of stone fruit, toasted nuts, and cocoa. They also sell 1lb and 5lb bags of beans from Go Get Em Tiger and Heart. They are open from 7:30am to 8:00pm and serve a full food menu with weekly events like wine tastings and live music.

The Coffee Bar in Shaw has existed since December 2012. Founder Cait Lowry opened a second location in the Golden Triangle in October 2025. They use Ceremony Coffee Roasters and Onyx Coffee Lab products to serve light and medium roasts. You can choose between a house blend of Colombia and Peru or a rotating single origin for espresso drinks and rotating drip. I find the seating communal and somewhat limited, but the espresso is excellent. Their menu includes black coffee on tap, cortados, and a seasonal menu.

Community hubs in DC

Little Hat Coffee operates as a bar inside the Streets Market on 14th street. Founders Hwan Choi and Frankie Contreras launched the business as an experimental pop-up in October 2023, drawing on years of barista experience. Because the cafe is located inside a grocery store, the space is limited, so the team at Little Hat Coffee wants to create an environment where customers can sit and chat for as long as they would like. They want to connect with the community and hope to collaborate with other groups and clubs in the future.

DUA DC has served Indonesian coffee off McPherson Square since September 2019. Founders Vivit Kavi and Irfan Ihsan want to bring attention to coffee from Indonesia, which is one of the largest coffee producers in the world. They roast single-origin, small batch coffee in-house. I recommend the aren latte, which uses palm sugar from the native Indonesian Arenga pinnata tree, or the oat pandan cold brew. Their pour-over menu includes classic profiles like the Kopi Tuburuk from Bengkulu and offerings that show fermentation and processing. Seating is limited in this small cafe, so it is a good spot to grab a drink on the go.

Neighborhood staples

Doubles has served the Park View neighborhood for 11 years. They use Passenger for espresso and drip, but they also host guest roasters like Little Wolf, Sunday Morning Coffee Project, and Thankfully. The cafe has two floors with community tables on the first floor. The second floor has two top tables and a ping pong table. I visit for the monthly open mic nights or the coffee cuppings on the last Friday of each month. They also provide bimonthly classes for customers to learn about espresso and milk steaming. Their sister location, Bar Americano, opened on the National Mall in October 2024 and provides the same high standard of service. During the day, people use their laptops while others share a patio with Sonny’s Pizza and No Kisses Bar.

Grace Street Coffee Roasters opened its flagship Georgetown waterfront location in 2016. They have four locations across the DMV and wholesale beans to dozens of cafes and restaurants. You can watch the roasting process through the massive windows that separate the front and back of house. I find their rotating pour-over menu consistent in quality. They care more about quality and consistency than speed. This is the perfect spot for customers who want delicious coffee and are not in a rush.
