Pagrati design specifics
Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects completed this 40 square meter cafe in Athens in 2025 for the client Moden Athens. The shop sits in the Pagrati neighborhood. I find the name connects the site to the original Moden pastry workshop located a few doors away. The design uses clean lines and neutral tones to produce a monochromatic interior. Textured walls and floors evoke dough and flour. The firm intends to create a warm, calm interior that connects naturally to the surrounding neighborhood.

The project pays homage to its roots while embracing a contemporary design ethos. I see the design as a way to celebrate the artistry of pastries and the ritual of coffee making. Because the space is limited to 431 square feet, Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects made bespoke architectural and furniture elements specifically for the compact area. The custom facade opens the cafe to natural light. The firm told Daily Coffee News that "the design, natural light, and materials come together to create a peaceful atmosphere." The project includes photography by Lorenzo Zandri and artwork by Alexia Psaradeli and Kyriakos Patsalis.
A kitchen stage
At the center of the space, the kitchen and bar form a central focal point. This layout makes pastry serving and coffee making a performance where craftsmanship becomes visible through transparency. I find the custom stainless-steel and oak benches useful for displaying the cafe’s products while maintaining the simplicity of the room. The rectangular floor plan places seating along the perimeter, with benches lining three sides of the room to direct attention toward the kitchen and encourage interaction between the customers who occupy the area. This layout encourages interaction across the room. The design provides a "serene setting for both the mind and the senses," and I recommend this cafe for those who appreciate a calm environment.
